Ardara
The heritage town of Ardara is a vibrant and bustling place which makes it very popular with visitors. It’s easy to see why the Irish Times named it the “Best Village to live in Ireland”.
One of only five heritage towns in Donegal, these towns have been designated Heritage Towns due to their uniqueness and the diversity of their location, history, architecture, and people.
It really is the people that make Ardara such a wonderful place to visit and the reason why so many make a return trip to the area. A warm and friendly welcome will greet you here.
The Ardara Heritage Centre, formally the town Courthouse, profiles the development of the tweed industry. To this day several shops in the town still sell high quality tweed and knitwear.
For beach lovers who want some family fun or a breath taking location to walk your dog, check out Maghera and Narin beaches.
Donegal’s number one visitor experience Slieve League Cliffs is a 50 minute drive away.

TO DO
WALK THE OLD BOG ROAD
If you would like to experience a small section of the stunning Blue Stack Way, this 7km loop walk, which you start at the cottage, will bring you along what is known locally as the Old Bog Road. Stroll through the bog land towards the Owenea River where you will cross bridge and then follow the river banks till you reach the main road back into Ardara.

SHEILA’S COFFEE & CREAM
If you’re a fan of home cooking and baking then a visit to Sheila’s is a must. This popular cafe is located inside the Market House in the heart of the town. They open for breakfast and lunch, but be sure you leave room for a slice of Sheila’s amazing cakes, especially her Apple Pie!!

LOCAL ARTS & CRAFTS SHOPS
No visit to Ardara would be complete without a visit to one of its many Arts & Crafts shops. Especially its very talented tweed weavers. These include the wonderful Eddie Doherty pictured above, Campbell’s, Bonners, Triona, and Molloy’s. Make sure to also visit the Donegal Designer Makers studio in the heart of the town, which features crafts from a number of wonderful Donegal crafters.

The Kilclooney Dolmen is a portal-tome or dolmen, prominent on the skyline north-west of Ardara. It well displays the classic features from which this type of monument derives its name.
Maghera Beach & Caves – while traveling the road to this stunning beach make sure to stop off at the magnificent Assaranca Waterfall, which tumbles down into a rock pool and is the perfect backdrop for a family photo. Maghera beach itself is just as impressive, with mountains all around and huge caves to wow both you and the kids.
The Bluestack Way is a 65km walking route that begins in Donegal Town and ends in Ardara. Walking this route is one of the most memorable ways to discover and embrace the true wildness of Donegal. It is a linear three-day trail that reveals all the sweeping scenery the Wild Atlantic Way is best known for. Consisting mainly of bog roads, open and often wet moorland, 21km of the total 65km are on quiet local roads.
